Dundee Uni stun league leaders

-

IN the Dundee Badminton Association Second Division, Dundee University (2) belatedly got their league season up and running and, in doing so, blew the title race wide open by inflicting a first defeat on leaders Carnoustie Panbride.

The students were convincing in the level doubles, taking a 3-1 lead into the mixed and, with the next three games drawn, a 21-17, 21-12 win by Phil Barrowclough and Alice Merchant clinched a 4-2 victory.

St Andrews University got their first win of the season with a 5-1 home success against NCR 2.

In the First Division, champions Nomads go marching on with two convincing wins.

First up was an 8-0 victory against a Harris side who were hampered by being a gent short.

Roseangle at least had a full-strength side but it was a similar story with Nomads winning 7-1.

It was a Middleton triple in this one as dad Andy and son and daughter Kyle and Alyx had three wins each, along with Maria Boyd.

It’s Roseangle who are second at present, following an exciting encounter against Nomads (2).

Roseangle are historically strong in mixed doubles but it was the level doubles that paved their way to success, winning the first three games.

Nomads (2) hit back, though, with two wins of their own and, in the end, it came down to a lastgame decider, with Trevor Walkinshaw and Fiona Pittman earning victory with a 21-14, 21-13 win.

In the Third Division, Dundee University 3 are the new leaders, following an excellent 7-1 away win against Monifieth Grove.

Christine Orr and Olivia Monteiro Baptista were the star students in this one with three wins apiece.

Twenty pairings took part in an enjoyable badminton ladder event at the Lynch Centre on Saturday. Another ladder event is planned in late January.
