CATHRO SET TO CALL TYNECASTLE SHOTS

-

NEW Hearts boss Ian Cathro is looking forward to being reunited with Craig Levein — but insists the Jambos’ director of football will not be picking his team.

The 30-year-old is Gorgie owner Ann Budge’s bold choice to replace former head coach Robbie Neilson after his departure to MK Dons.

Earlier this season, his predecessor was forced to shoot down erroneous allegations that Levein’s Ty n e c a s t l e role went further than just offering advice on team selection.

And Cathro was also quick to stamp his authority over first-team matters as he was unveiled alongside new assistant head coach Austin MacPhee.

Asked who would have the l ast say on naming Hearts’ starting XI, the f o r m e r Va l e n c i a a n d Newcastle coach replied: “Do you think that’s a valid question? It will be me.”

But he will be happy to listen to Levein’s input.

It was the former Dundee United manager who first spotted Cathro’s talent for coaching while he was working with youngsters at Tannadice.

Levein gave him a job in the youth academy and Cathro has gone on to forge a reputation for innovative coaching techniques following stints in Portugal, Spain and England.

Now Cathro is looking to work with his mentor to lead Hearts forward.

“If I can have help, I want help,” he said. “I want support, I want people around me who are part of the team.”
