Telfer: Trip to Ayr just as important as Hibs clash

game with both teams at the top of the table.

“We knew what we needed to do, we had a gameplan and I think first half we nailed it, second half we had a tough patch.

“Then I think we weathered the storm, Cammy saved the penalty, we got our penalty and scored and saw it out.

“That’s a massive thing and when you’ve got the backing of the fans like that they always drive you on that last bit.

“That’s twice we’ve played them and our unbeaten run i n the l eague continues but there’s a long way to go.

“There’s a tough patch of the season coming up which we’ll have to weather and battle through but just now we’re doing really well.

“We need to continue it and keep consistency through the Christmas period.”

A major factor in United climbing to the top of the Championship table has been the displays of goalkeeper Cammy Bell, most notably from spot-kicks — including another one on Friday from Martin Boyle.

“Before it I was thinking ‘maybe it’s one too many’ but it’s never one too many — you just have so much confidence in the big man,” added Telfer.

“You think whenever there’s a chance in front of goal he’s going to save it.

“Even the save just after the penalty from Andrew Shinnie I think is brilliant as well.

“When you’ve got Cammy Bell in your team, you’ve always got a chance.”
