Man is led to safety after fire breaks out in kitchen
A MAN was rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out at a ground-floor flat in Dundee today.
Two fire engines were scrambled from Macalpine Road Fire Station at 2.49am to a house in Charleston Drive after fire broke out in the kitchen of the property.
One neighbour said that firefighters had broken through the door of the flat to rescue the man.
Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus brought the fire under control and led the man from the property to safety.
Lawrence McGregor, a taxi driver who lives i n Charleston Drive, described the scene as “chaos”.
He said: “I got a fare from Ninewells last night.
“When I came along the road, there was no sign of anything but when I came back there were fire engines and a lot of chaos.
“I saw two fire engines and around three cop cars.
“I stopped to have a look but there was no obvious sign of a fire. I just hope no one was hurt.”
Another resident said he saw emergency services at the scene at around 3am, adding that the fire crews had broken through the door to rescue the man.
He said: “I woke up with two guys knocking on his door.
“They were trying to get him up and then the fire engines arrived.
“Two firefighters came into the building. I heard them shout something like fire and then they knocked the door through.
“The fire crews then went into the flat and came out quickly with the guy.”
The Scottish Ambulance Service was called to the scene but the man did not require further treatment.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “Two appliances from Macalpine Road were called to a kitchen fire at a ground-floor property on Charleston Drive at 2.49am.
“Firefighters led a male occupant to safety and contacted the paramedics to assist.
“The occupant was given the allclear at the scene and the stop message came in at 3.24am.”
