Hartley delight as McPake returns

- By BARRy SMITH

DUNDEE captain James McPake made his longawaited return to competitive football last night for the Development Squad against Rangers at Forthbank Stadium, Stirling.

The central defender played the first half of the game and manager Paul Hartley was pleased he came through it unscathed.

“He played 45 minutes last night and there were no problems with him. He did well,” said Paul.

McPake was also delighted with his return and posted a few messages on Twitter.

“Delighted to play 45 mins and be back out on the pitch! Another box ticked!” he said.

‘Jazza’ has been sidelined for nearly a year since fracturing his kneecap in the derby win over Dundee United on January 2.

It’s been a long journey back but, after his participation in last night’s U/20 match, he will be like a new signing for the Dens Park club.

The player may be a bit off first-team football but the inspirational captain’s return would be a massive boost as the Dark Blues look to push on in the Premiership.

Playing alongside McPake in the 3-0 defeat were other first-team members Nicky Low, Michael Duffy and Yordi Teijsse, who all gained valuable game time.

It was clear the impact McPake had in the team as all Rangers’ goals were scored once he went off after the interval.

One noticeable absentee was Mark O’Hara, who is still a cause for concern after missing training at the start of the week.

The midfielder has been recovering following hernia surgery.
