New restaurant bid
Firm submits plans for eatery and drive-thru to city council
Kilmac is seeking permission to build a Marston’s family restaurant and a drive-thru branch of Starbucks on Fulton Road.
The unused brownfield land sits on the edge of the Gourdie Industrial Estate, just off Kingsway West.
If approved, the new Marston’s will bring around 40 jobs, with the majority of workers sourced from the local area.
It will also include live-in accommodation for staff if required. It would be the first time the chain has opened a restaurant in Dundee. While Marston’s will serve alcohol, a spokesman for the firm said: “Marston’s family pub restaurants focus on food and families.
“Typically between 66%-73% of total revenue of the pub restaurant will come from food sales.
“Of the remaining 27%-34% of other revenue, only 19%-23.5% of this is from alcohol sales.”
In addition, Kilmac is proposing to build the Starbucks on the same patch of vacant land. The coffee house would include a drive-thru to attract passing motorists.
Both sites would also feature parking facilities for visitors.
The site is accessible by car, bus, bicycle and on foot.
The nearest bus stop is 200m away at the Asda Myrekirk store.
Architecture firm Halliday Fraser Munro, responsible for planning the development, said it would benefit both nearby businesses and visitors.
A spokesman said: “The proposed uses would aim to enhance the area for employees and business visitors, in addition to drawing in passing trade from those travelling on the Kingsway.
“They present an opportunity to introduce a mix of uses to enhance the amenity of the nearby businesses, as well as passing trade, without impacting upon the nature of the industrial estate area.
“Not withstanding this, the proposed uses would generate employment, both full-time and part-time during construction and operation.”
The spokesman added that the industrial estate is already home to a wide variety of businesses, including a car dealership, a go-kart track and a hotel, which the proposed sites would sit alongside without issue.
He said: “The proposed development would not adversely impact on the fabric of the surrounding area.
“We therefore respectfully request that Dundee City Council support the proposed development.”
