Young Stars bow out of Scottish Cup

- BY STEVE TAYLOR

DUNDEE Stars U/20s bowed out at the quarterfinal stage of the Scottish Cup after a 7-3 defeat to Solway at the DIA.

Defenceman Kris Inglis gave the hosts an early lead when he blasted the puck into the net after a breakaway in the first minute.

Andrew Pankhurst also slotted home to see Stars finish the first period 2-1 up.

The Dumfries side came back into the game and breached netminder Callum Anderson’s goal twice in the second stanza but Dominic Bennett levelled on the midway mark.

Dumfries hit two more again to go 5-3 up before the interval and wrapped up the tie in the final period with a further two goals.

Manager David Inglis couldn’t hide his disappointment for the youngsters and said: “We were in control of that game.

“We were twice in the lead and even came back to level matters as the game wore on.

“But all credit to Solway, they found that extra gear when we were beginning to run out of steam.”

Stars MOTM went to keeper Anderson.

Meanwhile, Dundee Michelin began their preparations for the defence of their Scottish Recreational Cup with a resounding 9-2 victory over Glenrothes Cougars in a friendly at the DIA.

Michy rookie D-man James Lees poked home his first goal for the Scottish champions and picked up a well-deserved MOTM.

He said: “That was our first game for quite a while.

“We’ve been working hard in training for the cup tournament, which isn’t all that far away now.

“Glenrothes are a pretty decent team, so to win by that comfortable margin means we’re doing something right.

“Time will tell, though, as we have a few more games coming up.”
