Cup loss shows Dee super sub is needed

-

AFTER the home defeat to St Mirren, it’s clear the Dundee squad needs some reinforcement.

After Plan A didn’t work at Dens Park, there wasn’t much to choose from in terms of gamechangers on the bench.

The men turned to on the hour mark to try and salvage something from the game, Danny Williams and Michael Duffy, haven’t made any sort of impact at all since signing in the summer.

Both put in the effort on Saturday but without much to show for it and the fact manager Paul Hartley didn’t throw on another body shows how short of attacking talent the squad is at the moment.

Rory Loy has only just moved on — to St Mirren of all places — and if he’d have been around he would have been the one tasked with changing things.

It’s clear, though, that he hadn’t hit the consistent level needed in the Premiership at Dens and a move was probably best for both parties.

The team chosen to start the game at the weekend should, no doubt, have seen off the challenge of St Mirren.

That’s obvious but football in real life doesn’t always behave in the way expected.

And for those days, a Plan B is needed.

Aside from the three attackers on show against St Mirren, the Dark Blues only have Yordi Teijsse — a player still getting to grips with the professional game — and Duffy, who was expected to have headed back to parent club Celtic by now, to call on.

It’s pretty blatant another attacking threat is needed to replace Loy, even if it’s just to make an impact off the bench.

I’ve got to say, I think the three who started against the Buddies will do the Dark Blues just fine for the rest of the season but some competition is sorely needed.

Elsewhere, there’s plenty of depth in defence with Darren O’Dea back from suspension after Friday’s match at Pittodrie and Kevin Gomis an unused sub on Saturday past.

Midfield’s OK, too, with Nick Ross and James Vincent available to deputise for Hartley’s preferred choices of Paul McGowan, Mark O’Hara and Tom Hateley.

Finding a striker or maybe a winger is a tough task, everybody’s after them, but a super sub is certainly needed in dark blue.
