Major import change on way for ice Elite?

-

THE Elite Ice Hockey League could be set for big changes next season.

The Evening Telegraph understands members have voted to reduce the number of overseas players to 13 for the 2017-18 season.

A source inside the EIHL has said the number of players dressed for games will also be limited to 19.

It’s believed the motion was raised and carried by a vote of seven clubs in favour and three against.

For the past three seasons the import levels have increased and, according to a source, several clubs have been unhappy with the rise. Now it appears their voices have been heard.

However, whether the changes are implemented remains open to be seen.

Meanwhile, following their two wins over Fife Flyers last weekend, Dundee CCS Stars look to take the same form into their match against Braehead Clan in Glasgow tomorrow (7pm).

Stars’ impressive shows elevated them to a play-off position in the league standings. However, Coventry’s win against Edinburgh Capitals on Tuesday saw the Midlands club go back into eighth position, although they have played two more games than Dundee.

Stars coach Marc LeFebvre said: “This is another massive game for us but, at this stage of the season, they are all big games. We have won twice there this season already so there is no reason why we can’t do it again. They are on a bit of a roll just now but haven’t played for over a week.

“We will try and get at them early and grab a lead. Winning brings confidence and we are in a confident mood. We have had a good week in practice and, with only having one game this weekend, we have been totally focused on that one game. This could be a rehearsal for the play-offs and, with them looking like they are going to win the Conference, we hope to delay their party for another week at least. It should be a great game for the fans.”

Fife Flyers face Belfast Giants in Belfast tomorrow before returning to Kirkcaldy on Sunday night to take on Sheffield Steelers (6.30pm).

DUNDEE Comets host Aberdeen Lynx at Dundee Ice Arena on Sunday (f/o 6.30pm).
