Tele appeal leads to ram-raid BMW

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

A STOLEN car used in a ramraid on a shop in Dundee has been seized by police — thanks to an appeal in the Tele.

The culprits behind the smash and grab at the Co-op store at Panmurefield Village were today still on the run, after targeting the store just after 4am on Thursday.

The front of the store was badly damaged when the black BMW 5-Series — registration number N111 RNC — was used to batter open the doors of the shop.

The BMW — stolen from an address in Carnoustie — was found at Happyhillock Walk about four miles from the Co-op after a reader saw the Tele’s appeal.

Speaking today, the resident said he recognised the number plate.

He added: “Although it obviously caused a lot of damage at the store, I couldn’t see how badly damaged the car itself was but I recognised the number straight away. “It may have been there for a while but I contacted the police just after 5pm and officers were here fairly quickly after I called.

“I’m not sure how many officers were here.

“My son told me they were at the rear of the property inspecting the car but it was at least an hour-and-a-half later before they came and spoke to me.

“The car had been parked though — it wasn’t just abandoned.”

The owner of the vehicle, Nicola Cameron, said police had told her that the car had been found.

She said today: “All they said was that the car isn’t in a great condition.

“I’m not entirely sure where that area is in Dundee but it is surprising to know that is where it has ended up.”

Police Scotland Detective Sergeant Sarah Brow launched an appeal for information following the raid.

She said: “Officers are reviewing CCTV and conducting door-to-door inquiries.”

Anyone with information has been urged to contact Police Scotland.

Onlookers yesterday spoke of their shock at the raid.

Davina Fleming, 69, said: “I’m shocked at the extent of the damage.”
