Set-up for UB40 gig under way at Slessor Gardens

PREPARATIONS are under way at Dundee’s Waterfront for the first concert to take place at the newly created Slessor Gardens.

Pop-reggae legends UB40 will grace the stage at the green space, which runs between the Caird Hall and the Tay, on Saturday night.

It’s the first gig to be held at the venue since it opened last summer as part of the £1 billion regeneration of the area.

This summer will also see Little Mix and Olly Murs perform to thousands of fans in Slessor Gardens.

A series of road closures have been put in place around the Waterfront to allow workers to set up for Saturday’s event.

At the site yesterday, the stage and other pieces of equipment were delivered, and workers began installing fencing around the gardens.

The installation of the stage was set to continue today.

Tomorrow, it’s expected that the final parts of the set-up will be completed, including the addition of bars, toilets and signs.

And on Saturday, the operation will be running throughout the day — from 8am when production facilities arrive to the close of the concert about 10.30pm.

It’s anticipated that the clear-up after the event will take about two days.

The footprint of Saturday’s event covers several local streets, with the stage being constructed at the Caird Hall end of the gardens.

This week, a warning was issued by those behind the gig urging fans to buy tickets from reputable sources — rather than from certain online retailers which were offering briefs at huge mark-ups.

Tickets remain available for both the UB40 and Olly Murs gigs.
