Drive to get more women golfing

-

A TAYSIDE links course is launching a drive to get more women to play golf.

Monifieth Golf Links was put on the global map last year when Tom Watson became an honorary life member.

Now, the links course will host a number of events next month designed to get more women and girls to pick up a club and get involved in the game.

Lee Sutherland, PGA professional based at Ron McLeod’s Pro Shop at Monifieth, said: “Golf is a fantastic way to burn calories and stay healthy through a low-impact — yet highly energising — sport.

“So, we are encouraging women of all ages to get involved in a sport that they can truly enjoy for life.

“We will also give attendees information about joining our 2017 ‘Get into Golf’ programme which will give them the opportunity to learn more and play golf at Monifieth Links over eight months from August to March.”

Monifieth Golf Links, the professionals and the lady club members have planned a number of events designed to involve more women and girls in the game, and to reaffirm the fun and friendships that female golfers of all ages and abilities can enjoy.

There are two events aimed at women and girls who are new to the game. The first is a golf taster session with the professionals at the practise ground on Tuesday June 6, from 5pm-6.30pm. The second is a fun putting event to be held on Thursday June 8, from 6pm-8pm.

There are also two events aimed at women and girls who already play golf. The first, on June 6, is a sixes competition on the Ashludie course and anyone who has played golf before is welcome to go along, join in and compete over six holes.

The second event is the Links Open Greensomes, on June 8, at a cost of £15 per couple, and times are still available from 9.30am-12.30pm.

Last year, five-time Open champion Tom Watson stopped off at Monifieth during his preparations for the Senior Open to re-enact the first shot he ever played on a links course.

Nobody at Monifieth Golf Links paid much notice when the American youngster pitched up at their course on Sunday July 6 1975 seeking a practise round ahead of the Open at Carnoustie, which he went on to win.
