GM men and ladies fall short in Euro tourneys
IN a busy weekend of EuroHockey club events, three Scottish Clubs were involved.
Grove-Menzieshill men were at Elektrostal in Russia for the Eurohockey Club Trophy, GroveMenzieshill Ladies at Munich for the Ladies EuroHockey Club Trophy and Edinburgh University Ladies in Vienna for the EuroHockey Challenge II.
The latter certainly had the better fortunes of the trio, reaching the final against SV Armenien (Austria).
Both Grove ladies and Edinburgh University Ladies were depleted, with players ruled out due to international squad preparations for the World League semi-finals in Brussels later this month.
Grove-Menzieshill men, however, did have a near full squad for their games in Russia and had a silver medal game yesterday afternoon against Dinamo Elektrostal.
However, the Dundee side ran out of steam following a punishing schedule of four games in four days, and lost 4-0.
Menzieshill men had opened with a 6-2 win over Navax Wein in the first game of the event in summer snow and hail in Russia.
After losing two goals, the Dundee side went on to win comfortably with goals by Albert Rowling, Paul Martin (2), Gavin Thomlinson and Adam Fallis (2).
Their second game, however, brought a 2-1 defeat by Austria’s Arminen, who were 2-0 up at halftime. A penalty corner goal by internationalist Gavin Byers brought ’Hill back into contention. However, after another penalty corner shot hit a defender’s body and the resulting penalty stroke was not converted, the score remained at 2-1.
On Sunday, Menzieshill were back to winning ways with 3-1 success over Paolo Bonomi (Italy).
The goals came from Adam Fallis and Euan Cuthill.
Albert Rowling made it three before the opposition got a consolation in the 45th minute.
GM ladies avoided the wooden spoon by beating Amsicora ASD from Italy 3-2 yesterday.
The Scots’ goals came from Hanna McKie, Sue Hamilton and Jenny Walls.
As the game wore on, captain Leigh Fawcett used her experience to ‘run the clock down’ to secure the win.
GM had been badly affected by the loss their three internationalists and had earlier lost 3-0 to Ritm Grodno (Belarus) 3-0, 3-2 to Pegasus (Ireland) 3-2 and 6-0 to Club Campo de Madrid.
The Edinburgh University Ladies started with a 5-0 win over Navax Wein (Austria) and followed it with a 4-1 win over Iris Lambersart from France.
They completed their pool games with a 4-1 win over Whitchurch Saints, from Wales, on Sunday.
Notable in the three wins was that nine players shared the students’ goals.
In their final game yesterday, the students drew 1-1 with Armenien (Austria) then won a penalty shootout 3-1 for a top-two finish with Black Boys Geneve, who had a 4-2 win over Iris Lambersart (France).
