Monifieth come out on top

-

MONARCHS HC had their annual ‘GoalHunter’ gathering on Saturday and a good time was had by all — young and old — who gathered at DISC.

Four mixed teams played, with the winners being the Monifieth team, captained by Dean Flynn.

The Monarchs HC AGM is on June 14 in the Morgan Rugby Club with a 7pm start.

Dundee Wanderers held their AGM on Sunday in the ‘Glasshouse’ at Dundee HS Sports Centre.

The annual Wanderers dinner dance is on June 9 at the Invercarse Hotel.

ALL clubs should make the effort to be represented Scottish HU AGM, which is at HQ in Glasgow this Saturday from 11.30am.

As the years have passed, local clubs have less and less control of how hockey is governed in Scotland.

However, there is little point in dissatisfaction if the attendance at the AGM is poor.

That just justifies the current situation. Ensure your club is represented.

THIS week’s hockey action, in the playing sense, is sparse with, on Wednesday, the Scottish U/21 men playing the Scottish O/40s at Peffermill at 7.30pm.

On Saturday there is U/16 National Competitions for boys and girls at the National Hockey Centre in Glasgow.

The Scottish ladies squad for the World League Finals was announce last week.

In the 18-strong squad there are five players from Midland Clubs — Becky Ward and Charlotte Watson from Dundee Wanderers and, from Grove Menzieshill, Nicola Skrastin, Katie Robertson and Sarah Jamieson.

Scotland’s pool in the event includes Netherlands — ranked No 1 in the World — who are Scotland’s first opposition, then China, Italy and Korea.

The other Pool is Australia, Belgium, New Zealand, Spain and Malaysia.

Scotland qualified for the tournament with a third place in the World League 2 at Valencia in February.

Coach Gordon Shepherd is confident the squad can do what is required to have a successful tournament in Brussels

BRUCE Rowan (Snr), who for many years manned the technical table at the Midland men’s Indoor League games at the Douglas Sports Centre, passed away on Thursday evening.

Bruce was a keen supporter of hockey and, in particular, Dundee Wanderers.

He will be missed by his many hockey friends and acquaintances.
