Buchanan goal makes history for Fife strikes

-

RAITH Rovers striker Liam Buchanan joined a select group of players after firing home the Kirkcaldy side’s opening goal in the 2-1 win over Clyde at Broadwood — his first since joining the club from Livingston.

The strike means he has played and scored for all four Fife senior clubs, a feat not matched by many, if indeed any, other footballers.

“It’s great to get a goal at this stage,” said Buchanan. “It can get to you if go three or four games without scoring and, when you join a new club, you want to get off the mark early to please the fans, especially in my case as I’m a former Dunfermline player.

“I thought we played really well, especially in the first half. We like to play attacking football, which is one of the reasons I came here, and I’m playing alongside good forward players like Greig Spence and Lewis Vaughan.

“The team will make chances and its up to us to get on the end of them. Our focus this season will be on gaining promotion and, if that happens, I’m confident, from a personal point of view, that I’ll be able to compete at Championship level once again.”

Buchanan fired Raith in front early, drilling a low shot past Bully Wee keeper Blair Currie after combining well with Vaughan.

Former Dundee United striker David Goodwillie levelled from the penalty spot nine minutes after the break following a handball by Iain Davidson.

The Fifers’ lead was restored when Clyde’s Scott Ferguson put the ball past his own goalkeeper midway through the second half.

Raith host Dunfermline tonight.
