ROUND-UP Scotland Euro victory at big Glasgow event

-

THE Scottish men’s senior squad won EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow with five wins out of five.

This included a 2-1 victory over Wales in the final in front of a capacity crowd.

In the final, Scotland and Wales made a shaky start.

Wales had the first penalty corner saved by keeper Tom Alexander low on his right hand side. He then blocked the rebound.

In the second quarter, Wales took the lead with a James Carson penalty corner but a second Welsh goal was disallowed.

Scotland’s Kenny Bain then had a shot saved. Shortly after, Willie Marshall had a shot which looked to be saved but it ended up in the net for 1-1.

Marshall had a couple of chances. The second one gave the Scots a 2-1 lead then the Scots keeper, now David Forrester from half-time, had several telling saves.

Wales replaced their keeper with an outfield player and came close to levelling the score. In the final seconds, Kenny Bain almost scored for the Scots.

Scotland’s captain, Chris Grassick, admitted to have five wins in five games was a bit special.

Alan Forsyth won both the Top Scorer and Player of the Tournament awards and one of Scotland’s keepers, Tom Alexander, won the Top Keeper award.

In the third-fourth place game, France, who had been favourites to win the event, took bronze with a 5-4 win over Russia.

The Scots had opened their account with a 2-1 win over France in the fourth game on the opening day then had a 6-1 win over Portugal. That was followed by a 2-1 success over Ukraine and, in the pool crossover game, the Scots beat Russia 4-3.

MJV Dundee Wanderers men had a 9-1 win over Dunfermline Carnegie.

Though the opposition was a Division Two team, it is an indication Wanderers, now in Division One of the National League, are taking pre-season activity seriously.

The half-time score was 1-1, Frank Mulgrew scoring for Wanderers and Alan Gouick, (ex-Menzieshill) netting for the opposition.

Wanderers’ other scorers were Fergus Sandison (3), Bobby Ralph (2), Elliot Sandison, Jack Fullerton, with a solo effort which started on the halfway line, and Sean Dowie to end the game with a penalty corner goal.

The Scottish Ladies squad, selected by coach Gordon Shepherd for the Euro Championships from August 18-27 in Holland, includes four local players.

They are Becky Ward and Charlotte Watson (Dundee Wanderers) and Katie Robertson and Sarah Jamieson (Grove Menzieshill). The squad heads out tomorrow.

Their pool games schedule is Germany on Saturday, Ireland on Sunday and England on Tuesday with crossover games on Thursday and placing games on Saturday.

All clubs are reminded the National League start-up is drawing nearer.

It’s September 9 for most teams with Midland men’s leagues beginning on September 2 and 3 for Divisions One and Two respectively.

The Dundee Wanderers men’s first squad continued their build-up with a game against Inverleith at Peffermill.

They now travel to play Western then Granite City Wanderers the week before the National League starts when they face Grove-Menzieshill.
