Newly-appointed club captain Flood aims high

last season when we actually went at it proper.

“It’ll be more for young lads and those who need to get some games under their belts.”

One man who definitely won’t feature tonight is Paul McMullan, sent off in United’s 2-1 home win over Queen of the South on Saturday.

Flood came on with three minutes remaining in the match and admits picking up three points softened the blow of losing talisman McMullan to suspension.

“He’s OK and obviously it makes it easier when the lads have won the game,” Flood said.

“But I think there’ll be plenty of times this season where Paul leads the team like he did up in Inverness, so it’s nothing.

“He just gets on with it, learn from it and keep his head down.”

The win over Queens means United have maintained their 100% start in the league to top the Championship going into Saturday’s match against Brechin.

And now they will be looking to stay there until the season closes.

Flood added: “It was a good result in the end, the lads ground it out and it’s never easy going down to 10 men, especially when Paul’s been such an influential player for us so far this season.

“The lads dug in deep and, even though they had a bit of possession, they never really created that many chances.

“I thought the lads did well and, at the end of the day, we got the win.”
