Maintenance of cemetery sadly lacking
IT has been interesting to read the recent articles and comments in the Your Voice section about the concerns over maintenance at Birkhill cemetery.
We have two family lairs in this cemetery and have to agree that recently the maintenance schedule certainly is not as expected.
This was highlighted recently by the state of the children’s burial area and the sunken parts, or “pot holes” as I would describe them, at the graves.
I agree that these are an accident waiting to happen, with some being so deep and then obscured by left-behind grass cuttings when the grass does get cut.
This could then lead to a subsequent liability claim being submitted to the council by someone visiting a loved one’s grave for injuries sustained unnecessarily.
A large fee is paid to the council when purchasing these lairs, with the local authority agreeing to maintain the grounds regularly, and I can honestly say this is not currently happening.
I could not believe the reply from the council in the recent article stating “it is not costeffective, sustainable or environmentally beneficial to collect grass cuttings for composting”.
If this is the case, then why does the council encourage householders to collect their garden waste and grass cuttings in the supplied brown bins? As we know, that is an absolute shambles at present, as certain areas in Dundee aren’t getting any type of bin emptied on the days they are scheduled to be collected.
My opinion is that Dundee City Council is preaching to householders to recycle but not practising the rule itself.
