Broughty’s Sharpe start helps sink St Murdoch’s

- By ANDREW CREEGAN

BROUGHTY United U/16 manager Blaine McAulay praised his side’s character as they fought hard to beat St Murdoch’s 4-2 with 10 men.

McAulay replaced Brian Gordon as manager in the summer, and saw his team race into a 2-0 lead inside the opening stages of the game.

Simon Sharpe found the net twice, the first coming after just 28 seconds, and McAulay was full of praise for the striker.

He said: “He did really well. He got two goals in the first half and ended up playing up top on his own for the last 20 minutes. He put in a really good shift.”

Goals either side of half-time from Jack Paterson and Bradley Bell brought Saints level.

Robbie McDonald then saw red for a foul in the middle of the park and he had goalkeeper Gregor Tweed to thank for keeping Broughty level.

Tweed made a fine reflex save to stop Logan Swankie’s header, and then denied Cameron Johnston inside the box.

Rory Jagusinski’s late brace secured Broughty the points. The first saw the full-back dance through the Saints defenders and slot a low shot into the net, and the second saw him effortlessly lob the ball over goalkeeper Roman Robb with only a few minutes remaining.

This was Broughty’s first win of the season, and McAulay is hoping for more of the same over the coming year.

He added: “We know that performance is in them but it’s about doing it every week, it’s not about turning up and doing it once.

“It’s up to them to replicate that on a weekly basis.”

In the U/17 Dave Pullar League, East Craigie Swifts won 5-1 against Fairmuir thanks to goals from Matt McKinnon, Reece Lornie, Callum McCleary and Keir Gardiner (2), while late goals from Craig Heggie and Daniel Wardlaw earned Dundee Rangers U/17 a 2-2 draw with ACSC.

In the Jubilee Cup, Carnoustie Panmure U/13 made it five wins from five as they beat Dundee West Reds 5-2.

Scott Hamilton bagged a hat-trick, with Karter Inglis and Jack Chalmers also finding the net. James Valentine and Rourke Davidson got the goals for Dundee West.
