Comets shoot Tigers down in cup mauling
DUNDEE Comets beat Dundee Tigers 11-3 in their Scottish Cup first round second leg game at Dundee Ice Arena.
Tigers were looking to overcome a seven-goal first-leg deficit but never looked like doing so despite a goalless first period.
That period seemed to indicate a vast improvement for Tigers over the performances they put in during previous weeks.
However, the floodgates opened in period two and there was no way the home team could find their way back into the tie.
A Tigers spokesperson said: “We competed well in the opening period and were disciplined in sticking to our game plan.
“Almost as soon as the second period started, though, we hit the self-destruct button and that made it far too easy for Comets to find their way to our net.
“We stopped doing the things we were doing well in the first period and our intensity level dropped.
“While the three goals we did score were well worked, we didn’t shoot enough and didn’t get bodies to the net.
“Comets are a very good team and were undoubtedly the favourites to win the game.
“However, we should have been running them closer than we did.
“We’ve got a double header this weekend with Aberdeen at home on Saturday then Paisley away on Sunday.
“For these fixtures, we need to make some big improvements if we’re going to get our season back on track.”
