Kirk to the rescue as Lochee edge it

- BY JUNICUS

LOCHEE United will go into the hat for the third-round draw of the Scottish Cup but they were made to work hard for their 1-0 win over Armadale.

The Bluebells created a host of chances in the first half but a mixture of poor finishing and some inspired goalkeeping by Dylan Rooney kept them at bay.

The visitors again defended doggedly in the second half but the home pressure finally paid off in 75 minutes when Dougie Cameron whipped in a corner and it was headed home by Greg Kirk.

Carnoustie ended their losing sequence with a fairly-comfortable 4-1 win at Longside.

Sam Simpson netted two penalties for the Gowfers with Ryan Dignan and Steven Cook also on target.

Downfield had one of the day’s best results when they travelled to Neilston and beat the Glasgow side 3-2.

The Spiders couldn’t have made a better start with two early goals but Neilston battled back with two of their own to level the tie.

But Downfield weren’t to be denied and grabbed a winner to take them through.

Paul Blackwood netted a double for the Dundee side with Jordan Timmons grabbing their other goal.

East Craigie made Newtongrange work hard for their 2-1 victory.

The Shipbuilders held out until the 50th minute when a Jack Wilson chip gave the visitors the lead. However, Craigie quickly hit back with Conan Howett putting them back on level terms.

But disaster struck in 70 minutes when a Ryan Porteous free-kick found its way into the Craigie net to sink their cup hopes.

Broughty Athletic crashed out after a 3-1 defeat from Bathgate Thistle.

The Fed got off to a promising start with Graham Hay giving them the lead but defensive lapses allowed the visitors to go in 2-1 up at half-time.

The second half saw Broughty lose their discipline with Jamie Winter sent off for the second game running and Derryn Kesson was also sent for an early bath.

Therefore, it came as no surprise when Bathgate added a third.
