‘Loud bang’ heard at major incident

- BY STEVEN RAE

TERRIFIED residents of a street put on lockdown by police reported hearing a “loud bang” — with bomb disposal specialists removing items from the scene.

Emergency services descended on Fairbairn Street in Coldside around 10.30pm last night — with a cordon put around a block of flats and nearby residents told to stay in their homes.

Part of the street remained cordoned off as the Tele went to press.

Military personnel from Explosive Ordnance Disposal in Edinburgh were seen carrying bags to and from vehicles.

Residents reported hearing a “loud bang” around 6.45am today.

Police Scotland has not confirmed the nature of the incident.

Resident Paddy Shepherd said: “You couldn’t get in or out of the street last night — now the cordon is past my house.

“I was awake in bed when I heard a huge, loud bang. It sounded like it was just across the road — residents just want to know what’s going on.”

Allan Mclaggan, 46, a plasterer, said: “Folk are terrified and quite rightly so — the bomb squad doesn’t cordon off the street for 10 hours for no reason.”

Another woman said she had attended her mother’s house around 10.30pm when police, fire and ambulance personnel arrived and police put the street “on lockdown”.

She added: “My mum is scared and angry that they’re telling us nothing — she doesn’t know if she’s safe or not. It’s terrifying to think that someone might have a bomb.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Police are currently in attendance at an address in Fairbairn Street in connection with an ongoing investigation.

“There will be activity involving police and other emergency services over the next few hours.

“As always, the priority is public safety and police will be in communication with partners and local residents to provide appropriate advice as required.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call to attend an incident in Fairbairn Street, Dundee.

“We dispatched two ambulances, two managers and our special operations response team to the scene. No patients required transport to hospital.”
