Man accused of New Year’s Day driving offences

A MAN has appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court accused of a string of driving offences after allegedly being involved in a smash less than an hour into the new year.

Craig Maiden faces three charges following an incident in Arbroath Road at 12.55am on New Year’s Day.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at t he city’s Scott Fyffe roundabout, at the junction with Kingsway East, after reports of an accident.

Maiden was freed from the wreckage by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

He appeared in the dock at court with clear injuries to his arm and leg.

Maiden is alleged to have failed to give the identity of the driver when requested to do so by police who suspected him of a drink-driving offence, of failing to provide specimens of breath when he was taken to Dundee’s police headquarters and of driving without an MOT.

During the brief hearing, solicitor advocate Jim Laverty told the court that Maiden, 32, of Parkhurst Walk, denied all three charges.

Fiscal depute Muhammad Sadiq asked for a trial date to be set.

Sheriff Alastair Carmichael fixed a trial date in April and ordered Maiden to appear at a pre-trial hearing in March.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that we attended a one-vehicle road traffic collision at the Scott Fyffe roundabout at 1am on New Year’s Day.

“As a result, a 32-year-old male was arrested on alleged driving offences and was kept in custody.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service added: “We received a call at 1.03am.

“Two appliances were dispatched and the occupant was removed from the vehicle.”
