Scammer steals £29k from woman
A WOMAN had almost £29,000 stolen from her bank account in a cold calling telephone scam.
The 59-year-old from Gretna, Dumfries and Galloway, received a call from a man claiming to be from BT Openreach.
He said there had been some “suspicious activity” on her computer and asked her to follow a series of instructions to “protect” it from any further attack.
Police say he managed to gain access to her online bank account and the money was stolen.
PC Ryan McGarvey said: “This was not a quick call by any manner and the woman was kept on the line for a good number of hours before she eventually became suspicious.
“By then, however, it was too late and the money had been removed from her account.”
