Discovery Walk in running for Bags of Help cash
DISCOVERY Walk Dundee is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.
Tesco works with Greenspace Scotland and Groundwork to run its community funding scheme in Scotland, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 — money raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores — awarded to local community projects.
Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.
Discovery Walk Dundee will be one of the groups on the voting shortlist for March and April.
The walk is a parade of speciallycommissioned bronze plaques honouring the achievements of inventors, engineers, writers, artists and philanthropists who either came from or had a strong connection to Dundee.
The plaques are set into the pavements around Slessor Gardens at the heart of Dundee’s £1 billion Waterfront redevelopment.
The first 10 plaques were unveiled in 2016, and a crowdfunding campaign is now under way to fund the addition of five further plaques to the walk later this year. Kelly Marr, of the Discovery Walk steering committee, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen by Tesco as a candidate for the Bags of Help scheme.
“Discovery Walk has really captured the imagination of folk of all ages in Dundee, and we’re looking forward to seeing this reflected in the votes this spring.”
Voting for Discovery Walk will be open in six Tesco stores across Dundee throughout March and April.
Customers can cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out each time they shop at the store.
