Devoted trio in it for long run
THERE are three names shortlisted for the Lifetime Commitment Award.
Nominee: GEORGE BOYD BAIRD Club: Royal Tay Yacht Club
Georg e Boyd Baird, known as ‘Boyd’, has made a real difference as a member of Royal Tay Yacht Club.
Joining as a Cadet i n 1947, he went on to win Scottish titles and a UK National title. He led the cadet section for five years, served on the committee for over 20 years, had two terms as Commodore, chaired the highly-successful Centenary Celebrations in 1985 and established the East Coast Sailing Week.
Boyd was a keelboat instructor for 12 years, developed radio controlled one-metre racing, weekly rowing activity for senior members and set up ‘Dad’s Army’ where retired members assist with the upkeep of the club.
He promoted sailing to disadvantag ed young people, making it more accessible.
Boyd has dedicated his whole life to the club and has always been an incredible enthusiast for his sport.
Nominee: BRIAN MOORE Club: Midland Hockey Brian Moore has been a catalyst for the growth and success of hockey i n Dundee during his 48-year involvement in the sport as a coach and volunteer.
Brian has been involved in all aspects of hockey from t eaching, playing, coaching, umpiring, officiating and managing.
Many players are involved in the sport today due to Brian’s involvement, with many of them going on to achieve international recognition as players, coaches and officials.
He is a qualified national umpire and international judge, and can be found each week umpiring matches at local and national level.
Brian has held various positions, including District U m p i r e s C o nv e n e r, manager of District youth teams and manager for Menzieshill Hockey Club in national and international competitions.
Brian instigated regular youth hockey events i n Dundee, leading to Grove Academy winning their first national title..
Nominee: DAVID STIBBLES MBE Club: Harris Academy FP
Rugby Club David Stibbles MBE has been i nvolved i n rugby since the age of four and has made a huge impact over the years.
David, who t aught at H a r r i s A c a d e my, w a s responsible for teaching rugby t o t housands of children over the years and encouraging them to take up the sport.
David has been a selector for Scottish Schools Rugby and a member of the SRU Championship Committee.
For Harris Academy FP Rugby Club, he has taken on the role of secretary.
He washes the kit, fills the water bottles, he is first aider, groundsman and has coached over the years.
David received an MBE for guiding nearly 2,000 children through their Duke of Edinburgh Award.
His knowledge of the laws of rugby are invaluable to both his club and the SRU.
