New pub plan approved by licensing board

LAND formerly occupied by the Whitfield Labour Club is set to be home to a watering hole once more after plans were approved by the city’s licensing board.

The proposal, the brainchild of Dundee pub guru Jimmy Marr, will see the space most recently home to the Glo-Tan tanning salon converted to a community pub. Councillors approved the application for an on and off-sales licence with no further conditions.

The Whitfield Labour Club closed around four years ago and, since then, the site has been redeveloped into a number of retail units.

Other proposals approved during the licensing board meeting yesterday include a provisional licence to sell alcohol for German supermarket giant Lidl, which hopes to open its new Kingsway East store in 2020.

The application was not subject to the council’s new overprovision policy as it was submitted before the policy was introduced.

A licence was also granted for budget chain Home Bargains, which is opening a new store at the Kingsway East retail park next month.

And the Brassica restaurant, set to occupy one of the units to the rear of the Caird Hall, had a licence for on and off-sales approved.

However, a decision on selling alcohol in a pavement cafe outside the restaurant was deferred.
