Ferry hit Pitfour for six to reach cup final

- BY ANDREW CREEGAN

FERRY Athletic U/13 will face Carnoustie Panmure in the Diamond Jubilee Cup Final after coming from behind to beat Pitfour 6-1.

Quickfire goals from Blaike Kyles and Will Hanbury cancelled out Adam Leese’s opener before Ferry turned on the style in the second-half to net four more.

It was the first time the sides had met on an 11-a-side pitch and Ferry manager Paul Riley was pleased to see his boys get the win.

He said: “It was a very welldeserved win. Playing up-hill in the first-half and into the wind was always going to be tricky.

“We knew they were big, they’d be quite physical but they’re a nice football team.

“That was the hardest thing for our guys to overcome, the physical aspect, because, although we’ve got one or two big lads in the team, we’re not a physical side.

“We try to keep the ball on the ground and play football.”

Pitfour were forcing Ferry into mistakes early on and capitalised when Leese fired a shot past Finlay Lyttle from the edge of the box after 20 minutes.

The Scottish Cup quarterfinalists weren’t behind for long as Kyles levelled the tie with a deft volley six minutes later.

In the blink of an eye, Hanbury turned Aiden Lockheart’s pass into the net to give Ferry the lead.

Ferry took control in the second half and extended their advantage thanks to an own goal and a closerange finish from Blair Milne. Lockheart completed the scoring with two late long-range strikes.

Carnoustie await Ferry in the final and Riley is looking forward to his side’s big day.

“They’re like us, they’ll come and play football. Up at North End Park, the surface will be nice, so, hopefully, we’ll have a good cup final,” he added.

Elsewhere, Sam Grimes’ goal in the fourth minute of injury time earned Broughty Panthers U/15 a point in their G Taylor League clash with Riverside.

Goals either side of half-time from Liam Jones and Lewis Munro had given Broughty the advantage but Dougray Smith’s header handed Riverside a lifeline. Callum Livingstone saw red as Broughty were reduced to 10-men as Ben Garrick’s late double looked to be enough for Riverside.

However, Grimes pounced to earn Broughty a point.
