Brazen twosome steal pensioner’s medication

A TERMINALLY ill pensioner has voiced his disgust after t hieves broke into his home and stole several precious possessions as well as medication.

George Beath, 79 and his wife Helen, 72, were sleeping in their home on Bruce Street, when thieves struck over the weekend.

The brazen criminals stood on food waste bins to gain access to the couple’s home through the kitchen window — even carefully moving items from the window sill and placing them in the communal garden.

Items including cash, a unique medallion and a men’s gold signet ring where taken, as well as medication including midazolam — which is used to alleviate pain — and syringes.

George, a former civil engineer, was diagnosed with stomach cancer in April last year and suffers from a number of other health issues, including bronchial problems.

George said: “I got up around 6am and noticed items were missing — I just assumed Helen had moved them.

“We realised someone had been in our home and called the police just after 7am.

“Once the scenes of crime officers arrived they established there were two people involved. They found two sets of prints on the food waste bin.

“The drugs were only kept in the event of an emergency, but I’m disgusted someone has come in and taken these items.”

The unique medallion, featuring a tram, a boat and a plane on one side and a lighthouse and train on the other side, was on an 18 carat gold chain.

George added: “The drugs would be administered in the event of an emergency by a district nurse so they didn’t have to carry these items with them.

“The syringes would be used to mix the midazolam with water — they should not be injected directly. I dread to think what might happen to someone if they use them out on the street.

“The police have asked what drugs were in the bag, but we couldn’t say for certain what else was in there.”

Helen added: “Police advised there had been a spate of break-ins in the area but I’m shocked this has happened in our street.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland confirmed officers were investigating the theft, which happened between 10pm on Saturday and 6am on Sunday.

He said: “If anyone has any information which could assist our investigation, please call 101 or speak with any police officer.

“Our reference is CR/4060/18.”
