ROUND-UP GM fail to beat off relegation in Euro Indoor

-

GROVE Menzieshill were relegated from the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy in Minsk, winning one of their three pool games and losing both relegation fixtures.

They required victory in their last game against Zelina but the Croatian champions came good, winning both having had only a draw and two defeats in their pool.

Cameron Golden gave Menzieshill the lead in the 14th minute but then conceded a crucial equaliser.

Zelina scored three in four minutes to effectively put the result beyond any real doubt.

Ben Cromar netted for the Dundee side with four minutes remaining but Menzieshill were unable to find the three late goals it would have taken for them to avoid relegation.

Dundee Wanderers got their outdoor campaign going again.

Grange agreed to bring next week’s game forward in the light of the women’s European Indoor tournament at DISC.

All went well for Wanderers as Fergus Sandison fired them into an early lead.

Unfortunately, that was as good as it got as Grange opened up a 2-1 lead.

Goals came at regular intervals in the first half as Grange pressed home their advantage to lead 5-1 at the break.

Wanderers were a more composed team in the second half although Grange still had a slight edge in possession.

However, there were no further goals until 10 minutes from full-time when Grange extended their lead to 6-1.

Wanderers had the last say as a penalty corner by Bobby Ralph reduced the final deficit to four goals.

Grange lead the way i n Division One, closely followed by Kelburne and not quite so closely by Grove Menzieshill.

With Grange defeating Dundee Wanderers it will be interesting to see how well Menzieshill face up to the challenge after their relegation in the EuroHockey Indoor Championships.

Kelburne should easily defeat Clydesdale to maintain their challenge.

Watsonians and Gordonians seem the main contenders for promotion from Division Two.

However, Perthshire could well cause an upset when they face Gordonians at home.

Such an upset would also see them register as promotion candidates, along with Carnegie. They are similarly placed to Perthshire but have a simpler task at home to Granite City Wanderers.

The main objective for Harris must be to start putting points on the board. Ten straight defeats are scarcely encouraging but their performances in November merited better outcomes.

St Andrews University made a poor re-start two weeks ago against Gordonians but at least they have a couple of games in preparation.

Monarchs are well down the Third Division but Saturday’s opponents, ESM, would be only a point better off should Monarchs win their game in hand.

So it’s all to play for, especially if they carry forward their good indoor form.

Menzieshill II could do with a few points to move themselves away from the lower reaches of Regional One but these are unlikely to come against leaders Clydesdale II.
