City gets set for ‘brilliant’ sports gongs

DUNDEE is geared up for one of the biggest nights in its sporting calendar tomorrow when the city’s finest descend on the Caird Hall.

The Leisure and Culture Dundee Sports Awards will see nominees battle it out across 11 categories to go home with a prize.

Among the awards a packed hall of 200 guests will see given out on the night are the Tele’s Club of the Year prize and the Sports Person of the Year gong.

The awards, which have been running in the city since 2000, recognise the achievemen­ts of Dundee’s brightest sporting stars, both young and old.

Sport developmen­t officer at Lesiure and Culture Dundee, Alex Knight is part of the team which organises the evening and believes this year the standard has risen significan­tly.

“It’s been a brilliant standard this year,” she said.

“We’ve had more nominees some years but quality-wise this year has been special.

“People are starting to get the idea of how to present themselves for these kind of awards.

“We’ve got good links with the clubs that will be coming along on the night so it’s nice we’re able to recognise the good work they are doing.

“We strive to show how much good work is going on in local sport, it’s really phenomenal, it takes us aback every year when we get the nomination­s in.”

Events and promotions officer Gary Smith echoed Knight’s sentiments, saying: “A lot of the time you might never hear about these people.
