Woman’s encounter with chainsaw suspect

- BY JON BRADY

A WOMAN has described the moment she came face-to-face with the man suspected of attacking an elderly golfer with a chainsaw.

Michelle Hunter, 54, found the man at the back door of her Kingsway home shortly after he is alleged to have targeted a 67-yearold at Caird Park.

She told the Tele today: “I had just been to pick my granddaughter up from nursery. I was about to let her out of the back of the car and became aware of this man.

“He had no top on – my first thought was that he might have been a gardener or something. I thought someone had sent him round.

“I asked, ‘can I help you?’, and he just looked at me and mumbled.”

Michelle said she spoke to the man, who sat “slumped” on her doorstep, for about 20 minutes.

She called an ambulance and remained on the line with a 999 call handler the entire time.

“At no point did I feel my life was in danger,” she said.

About a dozen police vehicles swooped on Caird Park and the surrounding area at around 4pm yesterday after reports that a man had attacked another man.

The victim was rushed to hospital with a number of deep cuts to his body.

Detective Sergeant Graeme Wishart said the victim, understood to be a golfer, was conscious and speaking when police and ambulance crews arrived.

Police arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of assault. Officers confirmed that he had been in possession of a chainsaw.

Caird Park Golf Course was subsequently closed for the day, with staff and visitors sent home.

In a statement, Police Scotland said: “We can confirm that at around 4pm yesterday officers attended a report of a male, in possession of a chainsaw, attacking another person within Caird Park, Dundee.

“A 44-year-old male was traced and arrested on suspicion of assault.

“No other persons are sought in connection with this incident. Inquiries are currently ongoing.”

A shocked eyewitness said she had seen “about 20” police officers along a stretch of the Kingsway at around 4pm.

She said: “I just saw all these police cars pull up on the middle reservation of the Kingsway.

“One of my neighbours said they had heard something about a chainsaw but nobody has been to the door to tell us what’s going on. It’s pretty scary if that is the case though.”

The detained man is being held at Bell Street police station.

Police have yet to confirm if he has been charged with any offence.
