It’s Beatlemania in Dundee again
BEATLEMANIA is returning to Dundee.
Photos from the band’s time in the city on October 20 1964 have resurfaced and will go on display at The McManus.
The event was the final time the famous four of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr played in the City of Discovery.
Beatles fans will be able to come together to view the 33 photographs and 38 negatives which were taken by Dundee-based professional photographer Winnie Forbes-Cochrane.
The images include a letter of provenance and copyright documents.
The phrase Beatlemania was first coined by Andi Lothian, a former gig promotor, in Dundee after he witnessed fans’ frenzy at the Caird Hall.
The pictures represent a snapshot of the height of the Beatles craze.
A number of the photos show off the fanbase of the band and capture a piece of Dundee’s soc ia l history.
The images show fans surrounding their cars as the Beatles arrive, the Fab Four sitting together on a couch being interviewed before the show and the band playing on stage.
According to reports on the day, there were 6,000 screaming teenage girls that all but drowned out the set.
Fifteen of the photographs show the fans in a frenzied state.
Sinclair Aitken, chair of Leisure & Culture Dundee, said: “We have such a rich and diverse musical heritage in Dundee. Caird Hall and the concerts there are a huge part of that.
“It’s really pleasing to see these pictures of The Beatles come home. They are a fantastic acquisition for The McManus.
‘‘They will now be preserved in our collections for future generations of Dundonians to enjoy.”
Beatlemania in Dundee also caused the band to have to sneak out of the Caird Hall through a coal bunker in order to escape enthusiastic fans after a gig in 1963.
The pictures will go on display at some point later in the year.
