Shipbuilders are penalty kingpins

- BY JUNICUS

THE final of the GA Cup will be an all-Tayside affair after Carnoustie and East Craigie won their respective semi-finals.

Craigie’s win at Hermes was a terrific result for the Shipbuilders and, once again, they showed they are the penalty experts.

For the third time in this season’s competition they had to go to a penalty shootout after the sides finished at 2-2 but they held their nerve to go on and win 4-2 on spot-kicks.

Nik Mann and Adam Brown were the Craigie marksmen.

Carnoustie had a far more straightforward 3-1 victory over Stonehaven.

Jake Mair gave the Gowfers the lead in five minutes although the north side hit back with a penalty seven minutes later.

Alan McSkimming’s side edged ahead again through Steven Cook in 51 minutes and Ewan Buggins clinched a place in the final with a third in 61 minutes.

Lochee United showed a bit of spirit against Newtongrange Star in the Super League to twice claw their way back from a goal down and eventually win 4-3.

Nitten took a deserved lead on the half-hour mark. Kyle Scott fired in a cross and George Hunter’s header gave Mark Stewart no chance. Lochee equalised against the run of play j ust before half-time when Greg Kirk fired home.

The visitors regained the lead i n 56 minutes when Ryan Porteous headed home but the lead lasted only six minutes with substitute Paddy Deane heading in the equaliser.

The Bluebells then scored twice in 75 and 84 minutes through a Bryan Deasley shot from the edge of the box and a header from Kirk, to edge ahead.

Nitten did manage to pull one back through Stephen Scott with two minutes to go but the home defence held out.

Broughty Athletic had a day to forget at Bonnyrigg where they were crushed 5-0. Jeanfield lost 3-2 at Hill of Beath. Callum Rarity put Haws ahead after 10 minutes but Gary Fergus levelled 11 minutes from the interval.

Lewis Elder restored the hosts’ lead on 53 minutes but that was cancelled out five minutes later when Tony Holt converted a penalty. However, James Mitchell headed a late winner for the Fifers.

In what was their fourth game in eight days, Forfar West End went down 3-1 at Camelon.

Trailing to a Ross Crawford goal and a Ross Cameron double, Graeme Hart pulled one back late on.
