Tesco to cut 30 call centre jobs

AN estimated 30 jobs are set to be axed from Tesco’s customer service centre in Dundee.

The supermarke­t giant has announced the closure of non-food website Tesco Direct and its Fenny Lock fulfilment centre in Milton Keynes, putting about 500 jobs across t he company at risk.

And the ripple effect has reached the firm’s customer engagement centre i n Baird Avenue.

One member of staff told the Tele they were being “paid off” with some staff members leaving the company as early as this coming Friday with others being issued different end dates.

Joanne McGuinness of shop and distributi­on workers’ union Usdaw said talks will be held with workers to advise them of their next steps.

She said: “This is devastatin­g news for Tesco Direct staff.

“Usdaw officials and senior reps will now enter into consultati­on talks with the company where we will look closely at the business case for the proposed closure. Our priorities will be to support, advise and represent our members through this difficult period, and to get the best possible deal for them.”

Charles Wilson, CEO of Tesco UK & ROI, said the company wanted to invest in “one online platform”.

He added: “This decision has been a very difficult one to make, but it is an essential step towards establishi­ng a more sustainabl­e non-food offer and growing our business for the future.”
