One dead, five hurt after smash on A9

ONE person died and five were injured following a crash on one of Perthshire’s busiest routes.

Four fire and rescue appliances were called at around 2.30pm yesterday to the three-vehicle collision on the A9 at The Hermitage, near Dunkeld.

Four ambulances were dispatched, as well as a trauma team and a special operations response team.

Police confirmed that one person died and the road was closed in both directions for about six hours while officers dealt with the accident.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 2.31pm yesterday to reports of a road traffic collision involving three vehicles on the A9 near Dunkeld.

“Operations control immediatel­y mobilised a number of fire engines. Crews left the scene after ensuring the area had been made safe.”

Three passengers had managed to free themselves from the crashed vehicles before firefighte­rs arrived.

Hydraulic equipment was used by the fire service to remove doors, sides and the roof of one vehicle.

Of the five that were trapped, the ambulance service tended to four of the individual­s at the scene.

One passenger required CPR treatment from a fire officer and a member of the trauma team. All the casualties were taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

The A9 was closed between Little Dunkeld and Birnam shortly before 3pm and was reopened at around 8.30pm.

Drivers reported being held up in long tailbacks while the incident was ongoing.

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 2.33pm to attend a road traffic incident on the A9 near Dunkeld.

“We dispatched four ambulances, a trauma team and a special operations response team to the scene and six patients were transporte­d to Ninewells Hospital.

“Two fire and rescue appliances were called to the incident from Perth, along with one from Pitlochry and another from Blairgowri­e.”

Senior managers from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were also at the scene.
