£40,000 for treatment is raised in just eight days

- By JAMES SIMPSON

A FUNDRAISING drive to send a Dundee woman to Germany for cancer treatment has raised almost £40,000 in just eight days.

Tracey Burke, 30, is currently recovering at Ninewells Hospital after bowel surgery.

Husband Greg Burke said the response to help get Tracey to Germany for immunotherapy treatment costing £70,000 had been nothing short of phenomenal.

Donations have continued to pour in from generous Dundonians as well as more than £4,000 earlier this week from Liverpudlians who heard of her story.

Greg said both he and Tracey have continued to be “overwhelmed” by the efforts of friends, family and strangers who are helping them try to reach the £70,000 target.

He said: “I’m amazed we are at our current position.

“Originally I thought we could have raised £10,000 in a week and it might have tapered off after that.

“We received an incredible amount of donations from Liverpool this week after the local press there had picked up on our story. We’ve got so many events coming up that folk have helped to organise including a mini festival, Besty Fest, being held at the Nine Maidens.

“The event has been organised by friends and it is already a sell-out, selling over 350 tickets.

“The funds from events such as this will go towards the eventual total.”

The former Morgan Academy pupil said he hoped Tracey would be out of hospital within the next few days.

He added: “Tracey is certainly a lot better and is eating a lot more.

“We hope she will be out within the next four or five days and then go home and rest.

“She is wanting to try and attend as many of the events as she possibly can that have been set up.

“Our intention is, once she is fit, we will be able to go to Germany in a couple of months depending on the funding.”
