Improving BSL public services

-

A CONSULTATION event on how to improve public services for deaf people will take place this week.

The Dundee and Angus British Sign Language (BSL) Community Consultation Event will be held at The Steeple i n Nethergate on Wednesday.

The event i s open to people who use BSL or support sign l anguage users, or who want to know more and give feedback on the BSL (Scotland) Act.

The act ensures agencies such as councils, the NHS, colleges and schools work with deaf and deaf blind people to provide better sign languages services.

Measures include providing information in BSL, better support for families and carers with pre-school children and ensuring school pupils and parents who use sign language have the same opportunities as non BSL users.

Tea, coffee and sandwiches will be provided at the consultation and BSL Interpreters will be available.

Police Scotland have confirmed that a 21-year-old man has been charged after the body of a male was found in Brown Constable Street on Friday.

However, no further details as to the identity of the victim have been released at this stage.

Residents have been shocked by the incident.

Neighbour Stan Catalin, 28, said he had learned about it after returning home from holiday at the weekend.

He added: “It’s really scary to learn that a man has died in the flat and that someone has been arrested in connection with the death.

“The police have been here all weekend and the incident van is still sitting outside.

“It is frightening to think someone has died in suspicious circumstances in the building you live in.

“I really hope police get to the bottom of what has happened.

“I spoke to the man a couple of times when I met him in the lobby but I never really had much to do with him.”

Other neighbours, Sallam Miraha and Aysyh Sultana – who live next door to the flat where the man died – said that they hadn’t really known him.

Sallam added: “He never really spoke to us but we used to see a lot of people coming and going from his flat.

“I don’t think he had lived here for very l ong and we only saw him occasionally.

“It’s shocking to hear that he has died.

“Police are continuing to stand outside the door and the police incident van is still outside in the street.”
