Ambulance delayed in congested city street
Council bosses have been criticised over the build up of cars in Dean Avenue in Craigie, with claims that emergency vehicles are struggling to gain access to properties.
Stewart Ellis, 66, has complained to Dundee City Council after his mother-in-law, who lives in the street, required treatment from paramedics.
He says the ambulance had to park much further down the street as a result of the number of parked cars.
Mr Ellis says the problem has grown worse in the last few years yet his pleas for improvements have fallen on deaf ears.
He added: “It’s been a real issue for the last 10 years but more recently it has definitely got worse.
“The council don’t seem to be doing anything about it despite the fact I’ve complained long enough.
“We had an issue the other day where we had to get an ambulance for my mother-in-law who lives there. My wife and I are up there quite a lot.
“Owing to how many cars are actually along that left hand side of the street, the ambulance had to park a lot further down.
“It took them about 10 minutes getting in and out.
“It’s an accident waiting to happen as far as I’m concerned.”
Mr Ellis believes a one-way system would help alleviate some of the difficulties in the street.
He also says there are similar issues in nearby Noran Avenue and Crombie Terrace.
Mr Ellis said: “The council are definitely aware that there’s a problem but they don’t seem to be doing anything about it.
“I would hate to imagine if there’s a fire there or something like that because there’s no chance of emergency crews getting up there.
“It’s causing a lot of aggravation for the residents because there’s times when you’re driving that you often meet someone head on and there’s not much you can do.
“There was talk before about making it a one-way street and that’s something I think they should look at.
“There’s space around that area that could easily be turned into a car park.
“I know they’ve said things before about not having the resources to make many changes to what is there.
“They really need to take a look at it overall because, in my opinion, it’s disgraceful.”
Dundee City Council was contacted for a comment but had not responded as the Tele went to press.
A CITY street is an “accident waiting to happen” because of traffic congestion, it has been claimed.
