Families urged to walk a little

-

NHS Tayside is encouraging families across the region to put a spring in their step as part of National Walking Month.

T h e h e a l t h b o a rd ’s Paediatric Overweight Service (Post) is hoping people will reap the benefits of walking as part of the campaign, which has been taking place throughout May.

Post was also promoting the benefits of ditching the car for Walk To School Week.

Post t eam l eader Dr Laura Stewart said: “Walking with your children to school is a positive and enjoyable activity.

“Parents who regularly walk with their children to school say this is a good time to have a natter, so it is a great opportunity to spend time with them.

“We know that walking to school can make children healthier and happier.

“We would encourage parents to try walking at least part of the journey, whether it’s parking a bit further away and walking the last part or even just walking one way.

“Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day and the journey to and from school is an ideal time for children to be active.”

To capitalise on t he campaign, Post’s Our Fun Fit Dundee programme will be starting soon and is now accepting bookings. The programme is aimed at families with children aged between eight and 13. It offers free sessions promoting healthy lifestyle changes.
