Johnson aims to be next ’Well scoring sensation
NEW signing Danny Johnson has vowed to become Motherwell’s next scoring sensation.
The 25-year-old has arrived from Vanarama National League side Gateshead after three goal-laden years with the Tynesiders saw him net 53 times across 85 starts.
Former ’Well striker Louis Moult enjoyed a similarly-prolific stint in Lanarkshire before making a £500,000 switch to Preston and now Johnson wants to continue his hot streak in Scotland.
“I’m very excited to join the club,” he said after signing a two-year deal. “It’s the next stage I’ve been working hard for. I feel I have progressed in the last few years.
“Motherwell, having reached two cup finals last season, are a club only going in one direction and I want to be part of that.
“When I am asked what I bring to a team, people get bored of me saying ‘goals’. But I know the team create a lot of chances, so I firmly believe when I get the chance, I will put the ball in the back of the net.
“As soon as the manager Stephen Robinson rang, it all happened very quickly. I didn’t need to think hard about it. It sold itself. I knew I had to come. I wanted to come.”
The Middlesbrough-born player came through the youth ranks at his local side and with neighbours Hartlepool, before spending time with Real Murcia in Spain.
A prolific year with Guisborough, where he scored an astonishing 56 goals in a single campaign, attracted interest from several clubs and he eventually signed for Cardiff.
A couple of loan spells with both Tranmere and Stevenage followed before he returned to the North East with Gateshead.
