Joe is cap­tain against Barcelona

A YOUNG­STER with a strong Carse of Gowrie con­nec­tion has re­turned home af­ter cap­tain­ing The New Saints (TNS) U/12s against Barcelona in a Span­ish tour­na­ment.

Joe Drum­mond (11) lives with his fam­ily in Penyf­fordd, a vil­lage in Wales seven miles from Wrex­ham.

He j oined the TNS Academy as an U/8 and plays for the U/12 team with some of their games be­ing against top English League out­fits.

How­ever, re­cently he made the huge leap to play­ing against the mighty Barca.

TNS par­tic­i­pated in the Ja­mon Cup for the sec­ond suc­ces­sive year, the only side to have done so.

All the top La Liga clubs en­tered teams in the pres­ti­gious cup com­pe­ti­tion.

TNS put up a good show and, against Barcelona, they lost 2-0.

How­ever, they gave an ex­tremely good ac­count of them­selves.

Joe’s dad, Innes, from St Ma­does.

His grand­mother, Elsa Drum­mond, still lives there and his grand­fa­ther, the late Ken Drum­mond, was the driv­ing force be­hind the mas­sive Letham foot­ball set-up in Perth.

Innes said: “Play­ing in Spain was great for Joe. He was proud to cap­tain the team. It was a great hon­our.” is
