Shock as woman dies after cliff fall

A WOMAN has died after fall­ing from cliffs de­spite ef­forts by res­cue teams to save her.

Emer­gency ser­vices were de­ployed in sig­nif­i­cant num­bers to Vic­to­ria Park in Ar­broath at around 7.40pm yes­ter­day.

They re­sponded to a call about a per­son who was seen fall­ing from the cliffs.

Lifeboat crews res­cued the woman at the foot of the cliffs and took her to the RNLI lifeboat sta­tion at the har­bour.

An am­bu­lance then rushed her to Ninewells Hos­pi­tal in Dundee.

How­ever, po­lice have now con­firmed the woman has died as a re­sult of in­juries sus­tained in the fall, de­spite res­cuers’ best ef­forts.

Ar­broath East and Lu­nan coun­cil­lor Brenda Durno said she was “very dis­tressed” to hear the news.

She said: “I would like to thank the lifeboat and coast­guard for their ef­forts i n at­tend­ing this in­ci­dent.

“It is un­for­tu­nate that the woman could not be saved.

“My thoughts are with the woman’s fam­ily at this dif­fi­cult time.”

The Mar­itime and Coast­guard Agency con­firmed it had sent res­cuers to the scene. A spokesman said: “The Ar­broath all-weather lifeboat and Ar­broath in-shore lifeboat were launched, as well as the Carnoustie coast­guard res­cue team and the Mon­trose coast­guard res­cue team.

“We were con­tacted for as­sis­tance at 7.40pm and crews were stood down at 8.19pm.”

An RNLI spokesman added: “We were called to at­tend a ca­su­alty.

“The ca­su­alty was res­cued and brought back to the lifeboat sta­tion and trans­ferred to an am­bu­lance.”

The Scot­tish Am­bu­lance Ser­vice had not re­sponded to a re­quest for com­ment as the Tele went to press.
