A DUNDEE MP has called for a review into “damaging” parking charges which have been introduced in a town in his constituency.

Stewart Hosie MP, who represents the people of Monifieth as part of his Dundee East ward, has written to Angus Council asking it to reconsider new parking charges.

Mr Hosie has written to community committee convener Mark Salmond regarding the issue.

He claims shops in the local authority had recorded a “dismal” footfall figure in December, down by 10% on the year previous.

He said: “At a time when our high streets should have been bustling with folk, it is disappointing that Angus Council’s decision seems to have put folk off shopping locally.

“I understand that tough decisions have to be made, however, I hope that the council will commit to reviewing the charges after six months when enough information has been gathered to tell if their introduction has been a success or not.

“Many of my constituents and business owners in the area are really worried about the damaging effects these charges will have on our communities and high streets. I only hope the council will finally listen to reason and to the people of Angus.”

Mr Salmond said: “I have written to Mr Hosie inviting him to meet with Angus Council’s chief executive Margo Williamson, leader of Angus Council David Fairweather and myself to hear first hand the issues facing the county.”
