Hunt on for driver who injured young cyclist

POL ICE a re hu nt i ng a motorist who struck a young boy and his bike before fleeing the scene without stopping.

Kerr McDonald, 12, was with friends in Dundee’s Asda Milton car park when the hit-and-run took place.

Although the St Paul’s Academy pupil suffered only minor cuts and bruises, both his bike and mobile phone were badly damaged.

Kerr’s mum Vicky Reid, 28, of Emmock Woods Road, said: “He was with friends in the car park at about 9pm on Friday when the car came out.

“Just as Kerr was lifting his bike on to the kerb, the bike’s back wheel got stuck under the car’s front bumper and dragged him slightly.

“The car hit the back end of the bike and Kerr’s left leg was hit. He was knocked over.

“The car didn’t slow down or stop – it just kept going.

“The friends he was with started screaming at the car. My son said there was a young girl of about 14 in the car who was shouting and indicating to the driver what had just happened.”

After being hit, Kerr and his friends told supermarket security, who informed the police.

“He is still a bit sore and shaken now,” said Vicky. “His knees are cut and his body is sore all over but it could have been a lot worse.”

Both Kerr’s bike and phone were Christmas presents.

The collision left the bike’s back wheel buckled and damaged the suspension.

Vicky added: “Kerr was pale when he got home and his legs were like jelly. Nothing like this has ever happened to him before and he’s always out on his bike with friends.

“We called the police later that night and were told they would come and take a statement.”

She added that police were viewing footage of the incident taken by Asda CCTV cameras.

A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland is investigating an incident which happened in the car park outside Asda Milton of Craigie at around 9.30pm on Friday.

“A 12-year-old boy on a bicycle was involved in a collision with a small silver car.

“He sustained minor injuries in the collision but the driver of the car involved did not stop at the time.

“Inquiries are ongoing and we would ask anyone with any relevant information to contact us on 101.”

Kerr was knocked over when he was struck by the car.
