East stung by Thistle’s late show

-

DUNDEE East U/14 were defeated 2-1 at home by Scone Thistle on Monday.

East opened the scoring when Clara Laing brought the ball under control before firing a fine finish high into the top corner.

A long free-kick from just inside the centre circle by Kaitlyn Letford caused problems for the Thistle defence and set up Laing for a smartly-taken strike.

Home keeper Zoe Maclean made a fine stop just before half-time, deftly turning what looked to be a certain netbound effort round the post.

Thistle started the second period strongly and kept the home team under intense pressure. East coped well, despite playing an unfamiliar 3-5-2 formation.

However, the visitors grabbed a deserved equaliser with 15 minutes to go through Rosie Pople.

Then, refusing to settle for a point, they piled on the pressure.

Just when it looked like East might hold out, Thistle struck their winner, Izzy Shering being the scorer.

With the final whistle looming, the young East side secured a series of throw-ins which they hurled into the congested away team’s penalty area.

However, nobody could get the decisive touch which would have ensured a share of the spoils.

This was, however, a high-quality encounter and both teams can be encouraged by their respective performances.

Just two days beforehand, Scone beat Jeanfield 3-0 at home with goals by Erin McIntyre, Caitlin McKenzie and Sadie Coffield.

Jeanfield were pegged back by the constant attacking threat posed by Thistle which produced some electric football.

The East win, therefore, completed a fine few days for the Scone girls who are growing in confidence and stature as these last two victories show.
