Pensioner in court after cyclist ‘was left to die’

-

A DUNDEE pensioner has appeared in court accused of leaving a Fife cyclist to die on a country road following a car accident.

Ian McFarlane appeared in private at Dundee Sheriff Court.

The 74-year-old faces four charges in relation to the death of Fife cyclist Scott Walker, who was found lying on the A917 road between Elie and St Monans on the morning of July 8.

Mr Walker, a 43-year-old fatherof-one, lost his fight for life in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, a day later.

McFarlane is accused of driving a car which collided with Mr Walker, and of leaving the scene of an accident “despite being fully aware of your involvement”.

The pensioner, whose address was given in court papers as Muirton Road, is also alleged to have attempted to pervert the course of justice by taking steps to conceal damage caused to his car as a result of the collision.

He is accused of trying to dispose of damaged car parts to hide his involvement in the incident.

McFarlane is also alleged to have driven while he was disqualified and without insurance, and to have failed to report his part in the collision, even after he became aware it had led to Mr Walker’s death.

Mr Walker’s sister said they were struggling to come to terms with what has happened.

“Scott was a much-loved son, brother and an uncle to my four children.

“He was also the father of an amazing little girl who he will never get to see grow up,” she said.

McFarlane made no plea during his court appearance, was remanded i n custody and is expected to appear before Sheriff James MacDonald again l ater today.
