West have revenge in mind against Fife rivals

- BY GRAEME FINNAN

DU N DE E West U/16 have their sights set on revenge when they host Burntisland Shipyard in the Scottish Cup first round on Sunday.

The teams have met twice in recent seasons – in the Scottish and East Region cups – with the Fifers coming out on top on both occasions.

However, Dundee West boss Ross Forbes is confident his side have what it takes to reach round two but has warned them they can’t afford any form of indiscipline on the park if they are to progress.

He said: “We’ve played them twice before and they have won on both occasions.

“However, we’ve started the season reasonably well so I’m confident we can get revenge this time around.

“The last time we lost to them, we lost the plot a bit towards the end of the game and the players have been well warned we can’t afford a repeat of that if we want to go through.”

West warmed up for the tie with a last-gasp win against Breadalbane last Sunday in the Bodycare Complementary League.

Breadalbane led 1-0 at the interval after scoring with almost their only effort on target.

West had the better of the opening 40 minutes but passed up numerous chances to make them count.

The second half followed a similar pattern with the oneway traffic continuing towards the Perthshire outfit’s goal.

However, with 10 minutes left, the home side restored parity when Finlay Taylor knocked the ball home following a goalmouth scramble.

Then, with almost the last attack of the game, West grabbed the winner when Derron Forbes nipped in to head over the advancing keeper and into the goal.

“I was beginning to feel it was going to be one of those days when we wouldn’t score,” admitted boss Forbes.

“We’d hit the bar and post and had lots of chances but it looked like our luck was out.

“So it was brilliant to get the two goals at the end.”
