Five-star Gowfers too good for Scone

- BY JUNICUS

CARNOUSTIE maintained their five-point gap at the top of the Super League after thumping Scone Thistle 5-0.

The visitors started brightly enough but, after Ryan Dignan gave the Gowfers the lead in 25 minutes, there was only one team in it.

Sam Simpson doubled their advantage in 32 minutes and Brian Clark made it 3-0 two minutes from the break.

It should have been four early in the second half but Simpson struck the post from a penalty.

However, the hosts added two more in the final five minutes with strikes from Paul McLellan and Pat Martin.

Second-placed Broughty Athletic were given a fright by Kirrie and had to work hard for their 2-1 win.

Bryan Duell headed the Fed into the lead late in the second half but Kirrie levelled through Ryan Winter.

It looked like both sides would have to settle for a share of the points but a great finish from Derryn Kesson made it five wins in a row for Jamie McCunnie’s side.

Lochee United lost further ground on the leaders when they went down 2-1 to local rivals Downfield.

The hosts took the lead in 14 minutes when Lee Cameron knocked home a cross at the far post and they doubled their lead two minutes into the second half.

Alan Tulleth was adjudged to have fouled Kerr Hay in the box and Jordan Colquhoun gave new Lochee keeper Josh Gorton no chance from the spot.

The Bluebells got back in the game courtesy of a Dougie Cameron penalty in 67 minutes and the visitors piled on the pressure in the closing stages but couldn’t force an equaliser.

New North End manager Tony McAulay got the first win under his belt when his team beat Forfar West End at Strathmore Park.

Gary Sutherland gave the Dokens the lead in 22 minutes but the home side hit back quickly through Rikki Gillespie.

In a frantic finish to the game, Sutherland, in 70 minutes, and Frankie Devine, five minutes later, put the Dokens in command.

But the hosts weren’t finished and they pulled one back through Craig Batchelor before Sutherland completed his hat-trick.

Tayport’s 4-1 victory over Luncarty gave them their first league victory of the campaign.

The Fifers made an ideal start with Dayle Robertson giving them the lead in the first minute.

The visitors levelled through a Fraser Mills penalty in 63 minutes.

However, a strong finish from the hosts saw them regain the lead through Ryan Suttie.

Luncarty then had Montgomery and Nicol red-carded, and Tayport made them pay when Robertson converted a penalty. Just on time, Jamie Gill added a fourth.
