Striker Reece to the four in clinical Ferry success
FERRY Athletic finished the year in fine style w ith a 5-1 w i n over St A nd rews Colts at Dawson Park to keep themselves in second spot in t he DDY FA U/14 Watson McInally League.
The game was a personal triumph for Ferry striker Reece Kidd, who bagged four of his side’s goals as the win kept them on the coat tails of league leaders Dundee Sporting Club.
However, while the scoreline may have appeared comfortable, the game was anything but as Ferry gaffer Barry Young explained.
He said: “It was a very close game. It was very tight up to half-time but we changed a few things tactically and it paid off.”
Kidd scored the only goal of the opening half as he came in from the left-hand side and slotted home.
After the break, the game remained tight but the hosts took their chances when they came.
Young continued: “We told the lads at the interval to keep their levels high and, to be fair, they were doing great and battling hard.
“St Andrews altered a few things themselves at the break but we adapted well to it.”
Michael Walker was Ferry’s other scorer on the day to take his season’s tally to 18 – two ahead of Kidd.
Young continued: “We’ve got four boys into double figures for goals this season so that’s a good return.
“But it wasn’t just about the scorers. Harly Tierney was outstanding in central midfield – he covered every blade of grass – while Fraser Wood turned in an exceptional performance in goal.”
Although his team is sitting handily placed, Young is refusing to set any target for the new year.
“It’s really all about continuing the lads’ development.
“We have guys like Bradley Storrier and Callum Clark playing together for the first time as a central defensive partnership and both have been brilliant.”
